Choosing a therapist

Research shows that the therapeutic relationship itself is a leading indicator of successful therapy.

So be choosy!

A few pointers:

🎯 Get clear on your “why” for therapy. This will help you keep an eye out for providers with experience in the areas you need support.

🎯 Window shop. Tune into what resonates with you when reading over therapist profiles, bios or websites. Notice what stands out as a “yes!” for you.

🎯 Consider different aspects of your identity. Does it feel important to have any of those parts reflected in your therapist (age, race, sexual orientation, gender, political values)?

🎯 What style/personality might best suit your needs? Soft and warm, direct and tough love? A mix? Structure or free flow?

🎯 Schedule consultation calls. Stay curious and ask questions!

🎯 Logistics. If you plan to use health insurance, make sure they are licensed in the state in which you reside, and look into your coverage!
